Hands of Hope – 2011 Update

March 8th, 2012 | Uncategorized | 0 Comments

Hands of Hope are a Christian charity founded by husband and wife team, Duane Newport and Jenny Westgate. Jenny is a well-known New Zealand obstetrician and gynaecologist and locums for KiwisSTAT. They sent us an update on what they have been up to at the end of 2011.

The last 6 months of 2011 were very busy for us; our building was completed and became the focus for many community activities. We were invited to start a church in the neighbouring village.  The local teenagers decided they wanted a youth group so started to come along on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  They can ‘hang out’, learn guitar, play table tennis and board games, listen to music and practice dances. We also had a number of visitors from New Zealand and other countries; they helped us provide a number of community wide events.

In August a team from New Plymouth visited and gave talks on different aspects of healthcare. These talks included dental hygiene, the importance of hand washing and germs as well as advice on parenting, including the role of the father.

In September we had on optician visit offering free eye examinations and reduced prices on glasses, November saw a health education day with a session on Violence against Women and Children as well as talks about intestinal worms.

December was a delight with Christmas activities, games and food as well as 400+ gifts for children, and food hampers and clothing packs for 250 families.

2012 promises to be even busier than last year.

Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude!

And attitude is exactly what drives David Watts! To excel in your chosen field is an outstanding achievement. To continue competing striving and attaining your goals past a certain point takes amongst other things takes mental and financial toughness and can be a whole different ball game. This is why AUSSTAT/Kiwis STAT wanted to help 19 year old Watts, son of one of our locum doctors realise his dreams of competing in the Skopje Macedonia World Kick Boxing Championship as part of the New Zealand team for 2011.

With a ‘give anything a go’ attitude the sporty teen began at Toa Fighting Systems which teaches a holistic style of Kickboxing that incorporates the same disciplines that traditional martial arts offer. Covering all stand-up, grappling, street / self-defence, weapon defence and is further complemented by specific physical and mental conditioning. TOA is affiliated with the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations(NZ) and utilises the WAKO grading syllabus to offer students a path to the coveted 1st degree black belt in Kickboxing.

Fight one, just 4 months after learning had him hooked as he entertained at a Fight for Life Charity event held in Dunedin and now as they say, the rest is history.

With only 18 months experience in the sport this talented Southland High School Number 8 has exceeded all expectations and been selected for the NZ kick boxing team. A natural leader, team player and peer support mentor his passion and dream to compete in the Worlds has dominated his life since his selection to the team in May 2011.

David trains 2-3 mornings a week at Toa Fighting Systems in Invercargill with a conditioning coach at the World Gym and 4 evenings a week I kick box. He is a 2nd Kyu (blue) belt in Kick Boxing and a 5th Kyu (yellow belt green tip) in Karate.

The World Championships is held in Skopje Macedonia 22-31 October 2011.

The team at AUSSTAT/Kiwis STAT are pleased to be able to contribute to the realisation of David’s dream, wish him the very best with the challenge ahead and look forward to hearing of his successes!
